As with Butoh I this painting is a glimpse of a Butoh dancer performing her artform. As much as Butoh I has the dancer energetically filling her space, Butoh II focuses on the peaceful, silent state often conveyed through this dance as well. Some Butoh dance groups reach toward us from silence, emerging slowly from a chrysalis, as they begin to bloom with life. I chose to convey this dancer’s silent entrance by giving her robe the heavier presence of our world, and allowing her body to retain a more transparent sense of transformation, informing us through shadow.
