For years I have been intrigued by Butoh dance, and have attended performances by several different Butoh dance groups. I find that this dance form immerses the viewer in that fragile place of disturbance and peace; a place of questioning and awe. This is the vessel of hope, desire and turmoil from which my paintings emerge, and I hope that the viewer of my paintings connects with them on that level. The Butoh dancer’s rice powdered face contorted into haunting expressions of isolation and peacefulness or agony are hallmark to the visualization of these dancers. Butoh I conveys the vibration of the dance as the dancer connects to us by crossing the void.
