Isis Veiled

Isis Veiled

  • 2011 | 30” X 40” | oil on canvas

Throughout time, various cultures have devoted abundant energy and devotion to telling the myths of gods and goddesses.  Isis’ story has spanned thousands of years.  In a book of ancient statuary I found a photo of a statue of Isis from Jordon.  First I drew her.  Then I painted her.  All the while, I never needed to adhere to the physiognomy of the statue. But the broken marble near her mouth intrigued me, so I included this clue from her past.  From her figure I sought guidance, not delineation.  I stacked her hair so it resembled the wigs of Marie Antoinette.  Partial revelation is a delicious choice for viewing; a veiled figure is often more beguiling than one fully viewed.  I wanted her veil to seem like webbing, possibly from a spider, silk gauze, or time.
