16th Century Man

16th Century Man

  • 2011 | 12” X 12” | oil on cradled board

16th Century Man is the first painting I made using the glazing process.  The reference image is from an early portrait at the Hermitage.  I aged him and experimented with the texture of older flesh.  I love painting older people and seeing the inscription of time upon their faces; he even wears the costume of an earlier age.  Although I derive a sense of satisfaction capturing a realistic image, the earlier part of this process is what intrigues me most and is what I use while painting my spirit paintings.  What a beautiful parallel there is between these painting processes and life’s process.  The painting begins with an ethereal image of the spirit of the man; layering on a series of glazes brings forth his earthly volume.
