Voices is a triptych I painted in Florida in 2012. I wanted a triptych of cool colors reminding me of the sea. After toning the canvases I looked to see what pattern would emerge from within each canvas’ background. The first piece I painted reminded me of the wind. That became Voices I. I don’t remember looking at anything in particular to get these figures; I immersed myself in the underlying tonality of the canvases instead. The next piece I painted seemed to have an Aboriginal, heavily framed face in the underlying toning structure. I reworked this several times until completion and this became Voices III. The third piece I painted was a female which I felt needed to be in the middle of the other two masculine paintings, and was therefore named Voices II. I was not as satisfied with this painting initially so I began to wipe it away. I found I preferred seeing a partially painted image so I kept it and worked on the detailing of the mouth. These paintings were all made at the same time using oil glazes and they were intended to be united as spirits of the sea.
