“Winter’s Fire” seemed to appear from another place, as have my other Spirit paintings. I was actually using a photo of a woman to capture the angle of her face, her head tilted back slightly. Then this ancient man began to appear as I worked on the canvas. I was not using a visual reference for him, but allowed him to come through me, painting what felt right, rather than what I was seeing. He appears to me to have come from another period, perhaps the Renaissance. I love the details of his face, his eyes slightly open, age infusing him with knowledge of another time.
