New Guinea Woman

New Guinea Woman

  • 2012 | 30” X 40” | Oil on canvas

I read that it was customary in some areas of New Guinea for tribal women to cake clay on their faces after their husband's death and to wear numerous necklaces, many provided by family members.  Each day of mourning, the widow would remove a necklace.  When all of the necklaces had been removed, her mourning period would be over--- a ritual which would benefit re-engagement in tribal life.
