Guatemalan Mask

Guatemalan Mask

  • 2011 | 16” X 20” | oil on canvas

I became interested in painting masks because indigenous cultures often used them to communicate with spirits.  There is something imaginative and trusting about donning a mask and costume and inviting spirit to enter and inform the dance.  This particular Guatemalan mask signifies an official in a performance.  It was painted using cold wax to make a richly textured surface.  From across a darkened room, it seems to fly toward the viewer.
